Welcome
The other day I went to the surf shop that is
around the corner from my house. A nice shop, but really
just your typical suburban retail store with some kids
working the counter. Inside I found a guy holding a baby,
and talking to one of the kids. He was asking all the
usual questions people ask when they are new to a spot.
Turns out the guy had just moved here from California. He
had also lived on Oahu for several years, and had even
worked as a lifeguard on the North Shore.
It is a small store, I could hear the
entire conversation.
The kid behind the counter was obviously
very stoked with surfing (I am guessing he had been at it
for a year or two). He was very enthusiastic, and telling
the guy about surfing in Texas. "Dude, the Flagship
kicks-ass!" he said.
I cringed a bit.
I almost joined in when the kid told the
baby toting California surfer/lifeguard about this secret
spot in Surfside called the Octagon, but they where
having fun so I did not interrupt. I just looked at
T-shirts and eavesdropped the best I could.
You see, I have had this conversation a
hundred times since I launched this web site. I get a lot
of E-mail, and most of it is from surfers who are moving
to Texas. And I do think that the waves at the Flagship
can "kick-ass", but there is about a hundred
disclaimers that you need to make with that statement
when you are talking to a surfer from the Pacific.
I lived the surfers dream for many years.
Warm Pacific swells at my door step, a world class point
break just down the road. Surf so good it was like a
dream. So I am comfortable with these opinions that I am
offering. I have a lot of fun surfing the Texas coast. I
catch my fair share of waves, and some of them are really
good. But it is different from other places, and that
should be noted from the start.
I hope that if you do decide to continue
on through these pages, that you will enjoy the content,
or at the very least find it useful. If you surf in
Texas, I hope that you are as stoked with it as I am. We
may lack the quality swells of the Pacific, but we make
up for it with sprit.
Yes, the brotherhood is alive. It has
just moved to Texas.
Attitude is everything.
Aloha
Ed
P.S. Keep those cards and letters coming! - I will try to answer all that I can, but history has shown that some do get missed. My appologies to the unanswered.
